My son, M is seven. He is at that age where he watches and listens to everything my husband and I say and do. About a year and a half ago my husband and I were having financial problems and my husband was having health problems. Everyday seemed to be full of sadness, worry and stress. I didn’t want my son thinking that with so many problems going on that nothing good was happening. I spent time thinking about what was the best way to show him that even on the darkest of days you can have a little bit of sunshine.
I finally decided that as part of our nightly routine, when i was tucking him into bed I would ask him what the best part of his day was. Once he was done sharing his I would then share mine. Depending on the events of the day the best part could simply be having dinner as a family or it could be amazing for going to the zoo.
I didn’t realize how much he loved this part of his bed time until he stayed a week at his Grandma’s house. One night he was telling her about how much he loved it and was missing it. She made sure to let me know what he said. I make sure that I ask him that every night.
